Walk to School Week 20-24 May 2024

Get moving and encourage children to be more active during Walk to School Week 2024. The challenge is designed to help children reach their minimum 60 minutes of exercise per day.

There are so many benefits to walking. Being active and getting some exercise in the morning before arriving at school will help set children up for a positive day; improving focus and concentration, and instilling a sense of physical and mental wellbeing.

Walking to school can help children to feel more independent and confident. They can learn the route from home to school, which can boost their navigation skills whilst learning more about road safety. Once children are old enough to walk to school by themselves, they'll already have the confidence and the knowledge that they need to get there safely.

Another great benefit of Walk to School Week is that it reduces the morning traffic ensuring sustainable transport. Instead of driving to school in the car and contributing to congestion, carbon emissions, and pollution, bypass this route completely by walking. Help to reduce carbon emissions and enjoy all the benefits of walking at the same time.

In this month’s Decarbonisation2024, video we’re going on a walk together.

The video looks at Sustainable Transportation. I share how walking home had a big impact for me as a child. We also explore whether public transport is a suitable alternative to a coach for school trips.

Don’t forget to tell me what you’re doing to promote Sustainable Transportation in your school
