Trauma Informed Practice - Church of England Foundation for Educational Leadership visit

The DBE was delighted to welcome Lorraine Prince, Head of networks for the Church of England Foundation for Educational Leadership (CEFEL), to three Diocesan schools showcasing the work they do to support their communities through a trauma informed approach. The visit had been prompted by discussions with Lorraine through Chester DBE’s involvement with the national Trauma Informed peer support network. A number of schools have been involved in the network through three cohorts and it has been a great opportunity for schools to develop their practice as they take a trauma informed approach to working with their children. There is a lot of great practice taking place across the Diocese but the schools visited (all in one day!) were examples of different experiences and approaches all rooted in the trauma informed approach.

The day started with a visit to Moreton Christ Church CE Primary School to look at the well embedded work to support children in their self regulation. We spoke to children across all ages and were told about how each child is supported to understand what works best for them to help them learn in class. This included fidget toys and bands and time out of the classroom to do something physical to help them refocus; but also some more unusual actions including a year 3 child who found that doing maths problems helped him regulate and a very talented year 6 artist who discovered that sketching helped him be calm as well as uncovering an amazing skill.

We then moved on to Huxley CE Primary school which offers flexi-schooling. This innovative approach has parents bringing their children from great distances to access the opportunity to have their children in school 3 days a week whilst home-schooling on the other days. This enables their children to access the full curriculum and gives them the opportunity to enhance this through activities and visits from home. A number of parents joined us to talk with passion about the provision and the difference it made to both them and their children. A common message given was that their children would not be in school if they had not discovered flexi-schooling and, in particular, Huxley.

The day ended with a trip to Overleigh St Mary’s CE Primary School where we heard about the amazing work the school had done when over 90 children from Afghanistan had been assigned to the school at very short notice. The support given, not just to the children but their families, was inspiring to hear. As well as the very clear welcome given to the children and their families by the St Mary’s community, the school had ensured that their culture was celebrated and challenged the wider authorities about the provision offered to the families after a very traumatic journey to England. They provided English lessons, cooking opportunities, clothes, toys and baby equipment for families and gave the children and their families a voice. The school provided a safe space for children to reflect on their traumatic experiences and the support to manage the impact of this and move forward with their lives and education.

Following the day the schools have been invited to take part in a number of events organized by CEFEL including a podcast.

Lorraine Prince said ‘I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the warm welcome I received during my visit to your schools. It was truly inspiring to witness firsthand the dedication and passion of the pupils, staff, and headteachers in creating educational environments that embody the vision for education.’

Emma Drew, head of Overleigh St Mary’s said ‘Thank you and it was a pleasure to have you both visit and reflect with.  As ever, it is being part of part of a church school and the Diocese that has kept me going though our many adventures.’

Rachel Gourley, head of Huxley said ‘We really enjoyed your visit and I know that our parents really valued the opportunity to talk to you too’

Amanda Donelan, headteacher of Moreton Christ Church said ‘We really enjoyed your visit and are grateful you were able to include us. We look forward to hearing more about Lorraine's work - oh and year 5 are definitely holding you to the podcast!’
