Governors

Governors are the largest voluntary body in the country. They, along with Trust Members and Directors, provide a valuable service to the community and help to influence the work of schools and the future of young people.

These roles are also important in church schools, with additional responsibility for developing, monitoring and supporting a theologically rooted Christian vision for the school; ensuring that it impacts all areas of school life.

Governance Training

We offer a range of online resources for governors in our schools, including an Introduction for Governors, SIAMS for Governors, Ofsted for Governors, Headteacher Wellbeing for Governors, and the Chairs’ Network.

Governance Appointments

The DBE is involved in the appointment to all levels of governance in both maintained (VC/VA schools) and academies, supporting appointments across the 114 schools alongside local knowledge and community links. If you feel that you have the relevant skills and experience and would like to support a church school in this manner please contact Linda Boys.

Admissions

In Voluntary Aided schools and academies, the Governing or Trust Board is the Admissions Authority and must ensure that they ‘determine’ admission arrangements before the 28th February annually, two years in advance.

Admission authorities for church schools are required to follow the guidance published by their DBE in addition to the current admissions code. Our guidance is regularly updated based on both the current code and determinations by the Schools Adjudicator so it is important to look at the guidance each year before determining admission arrangements.
